Billy Wessels '09
Billy Wessels graduated from TCU in the spring of 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in News-Editorial Journalism. While attending TCU, he spent the majority of his time on the second floor of Moudy South as the sports and photo editor for the TCU Daily Skiff.
Some things never change. Billy is still spending all of his time in the office of a newspaper, but now as the sports editor of his hometown paper, the Waxahachie Daily Light. He covers seven high schools in the county, takes pictures, shoots video and writes stories for all local sporting events. While at the Waxahachie Daily Light, Billy has flourished in honing his craft and has won several awards, including best overall sports writer and third best columnist in the region, according to the Texas Press Association.
Since leaving TCU, Billy has not stopped writing. His career started with a job at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he spent nearly two years in downtown Fort Worth covering high school and professional sports. His favorite moment during his time there was covering the Dallas Cowboys versus New Orleans Saints game on Thanksgiving Day 2010. There, Wessels got to cover the Saints, his favorite team, and interview stars like Drew Brees and Reggie Bush.
However, Billy’s writing doesn’t stop in Ellis County. One of the highlights of the job is getting the opportunity to cover his alma mater for Yahoo! as a reporter for Rivals' site www.purplemenace.com. These stories mostly focus on recruiting, but he also focuses on information related to current athletes.
In what little spare time Billy does have, he writes. He is also an aspiring standup comedian and is in the middle of writing a movie. Billy is hoping to finish this movie by the end of the year and looks forward to the day that all of his fellow Horned Frogs can see it in theaters.
